Ring of Dreams is exactly what it says it is. The concept comes from boxing. Kerry Smith, a cofounder of Ring of Dreams, attached a lot of meaning to boxing. It made a difference in his life. He could have been a street thug, but boxing turned him around. “If it worked for me, it can help kids who have it even worse.”
Ring of Dreams was started to help kids through amateur boxing. It currently has over 20 kids involved. It keeps them focused and provides them counseling. Ring of Dreams started promoting boxing after meeting Derek Edwards, the first boxer Mr. Smith helped. It tells kids how Derek made it and how he avoided problems. Boxing can change life and make it exciting. In the ring, lots of people have a dream, whether to be the best or to get rich. It has brought a lot of people out of the ghettos.
The shows were started to help finance the kids’ amateur boxing. In addition to boxing skills, Ring of Dreams provides much needed counseling for youngsters who are often not receiving appropriate guidance from their parents, but inappropriate guidance from their peers. It helps provide children with happiness and a good childhood. Lastly, it seeks to provide local rings to the kids so they have more access than is now available.
Ring of Dreams has changed the lives of Derek Edwards, Carlette Ewell, and Kerry Smith. If it changed these three lives, it can easily change the lives of 100 more!
